The Sinharaja Forest
The Sinharaja Forest contains many rivers and streams. It also contains a large number of plants used for ayurvedic medicine. The forest is also the home of many rare birds, animals and insects found nowhere else in the world. In addition, 60% of the trees found in the Sinharaja are endemic to Sri Lanka. The forest is legally protected and no one can cut down the trees or destroy the forest in any way. It is truly a national treasure. The Sinharaja Forest is the only rain forest of any considerable size left in Sri Lanka. It is about 9,000 hectares in extent. This forest is situated in the south western section of the island. The local name of the Sinharaja Forest is "Sinharaja Adaviya", Which means the forest of the lion king. The forest is said to have belonged to the ancient kings of Sri Lanka.
