Let's protect the Environment.

Image
The environment is the surrounding around us. Water, air, trees, land and beings are the parts of the environment. Today environmental pollution has become a major problem. People pollute the water by mixing poisonous chemicals and waster matter. Air is polluted by mixing smoke and poisonous gases issued through the chimneys of large factories. Land is polluted by collecting garbage, people cut down trees in a careless manner. They never think of the bad effects of it. We get the most needed rain because of the trees. Trees help not only to the man but also to the animals. Birds build their nests on trees. Trees stop the soil erosion too. We should not put garbage here and there. We should collect the garbage and burn. If we want to lead a healthy life we should keep our environment clean. We should grow more and more trees. We should keep our gardens clean. Let's protect our environment.

Uses of Trees

Image
The great bond between man and trees has been prevailing since centuries. In the ancient time, man used to satisfy most of his needs from the forest. He has been very close to these natural resources gifted by mother nature. Man feeds on the fruits juices and leaves of them. Even the fallen branches give him fuel to cook his daily bread. Can we imagine an earth where there will be no trees no water but only acid rains and concrete jungles? But it's sorry to say, most of the valuable plants an being cut by man for his selfish ends. Simultaneously we are losing our bio-diversity A man who destroyed a tree for his own benefit, unawarely makes his own life a died one, as trees have been our saviours.

The Sinharaja Forest

Image
The Sinharaja Forest contains many rivers and streams. It also contains a large number of plants used for ayurvedic medicine. The forest is also the home of many rare birds, animals and insects found nowhere else in the world. In addition, 60% of the trees found in the Sinharaja are endemic to Sri Lanka. The forest is legally protected and no one can cut down the trees or destroy the forest in any way. It is truly a national treasure. The Sinharaja Forest is the only rain forest of any considerable size left in Sri Lanka. It is about 9,000 hectares in extent. This forest is situated in the south western section of the island. The local name of the Sinharaja Forest is "Sinharaja Adaviya", Which means the forest of the lion king. The forest is said to have belonged to the ancient kings of Sri Lanka.

My Favorite Month of the Year

Image
My favorite month of course is December. It is the last month of the year but the very best. The special reason is because Christmas falls in December. It is a very happy time. My aunty sews pretty clothes for me to go to church and visit relations. I get lots of gifts from my relatives here and abroad. We make Christmas cake and other sweetmeats. The house is beautifully decorated and a Christmas tree all lit up stands in the hall. I love December because of the holidays. I go on trips, visit friends and relations and enjoy myself very much with my family.

A waterfall in Sri Lanka

Image
Water is essential but common. It has so many formations. Among those waterfalls are the most fascinating natural resources we possess. Dunhinda is one of the best in my little Sri Lanka which is located in Badulla district. The name implies the smoke like spray it creates as its water falls into the rock pool below. The graceful nature of falling the huge flow of water is really enchanting and amusing. Cascading through the lush green forests and splashing on the gigantic rocks and innocently moving ahead wetting and fertilizing an enormous area of Badulla Village. This massive volume of glistening water has some magic in it that calms the tensed mind.

Vesak Festival

Image
Vesak is the most important religious festival to Buddhists. It is held in the month of May every year. It marks three important events in the life of Lord Buddha. They are the birth, the enlightenment and the passing away of Lord Buddha. We observe "Sil" on this day. we also listen to sermons and other religious talks. We decorate our houses with Vesak lanterns and other decorations. We also illuminate our houses with colored bulbs.  Pandals are erected at public places. We go on pilgrimages to sacred places. All these acts purify our thoughts. Special religious programmes are implemented by Buddhist associations. Vesak lantern competitions too are held. Let us live happily in peace and harmony on this important day.

A place of historical value

Image
They are many places of historical value in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is one of the them. Sigiriya is a rock fortress built by on of our Sinhalese kings. It was built by king kasyapa. It is situated in the Matale district. Sigiriya is world famous for its frescoes. Hundreds of foreign tourists visit this place everyday. It has become a popular place among the local tourists too. We can also see the inscriptions on the mirror wall. They are called Graffiti. These verses have been written on this wall by the visitors in ancient times. There are ruins of an ancient palace on the top of the rock. Also there is a moat around the rock. Sigiriya is a considered the eight wonder of the world.
